Choice 4. John 1-3 That Ye May Have Fellowship with Us and with God. Read 1 John 1:1-4.

Describe in writing John’s desire for those he wrote to. Study the following scripture references and them list what these verses teach about how we can come to know God better and have greater joy and fellowship with God:
He desires us to have fellowship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ so we will have joy.

1 John 1:8-10 – We must confess our sins, repent, and we will be forgiven.
1 John 2:3-6 – Keep His commandments
1 John 2:9-11; 3:11-19 – Love our family and Heavenly Father
1 John 2:15-17 – Love not the world
1 John 2:20-21, 27 – Be teachable
1 John 3:4-6 – Do not sin

Choose one of the ways to have greater joy and fellowship with God as you described it above, and write a paragraph explaining how you can better implement those principles in your life.

The scriptures that I liked the most was 1 John 2:15-17. In those scriptures it talks about how we must not love the things of the world because they are full of pride and lust. The world will pass way, but Heavenly Father will always be there and abide with you if you do his will. I think this is so important because the world is becoming more and more wicked. There comes a point in our life when we have to learn that the gospel is more than going to church; it is life. For me this came when I went to the temple for the first time. I realized the gospel is everything and I love it. Our Heavenly Father has given us everything to return to live with Him again. I hope I will be able to teach this principle to my children.

2.     How is marriage looked upon?
It is honorable.
3.     What warnings are given about covetousness?
We need to be content with what we have.
4.     What is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever”?
Jesus Christ
5.     How are we sanctified?
Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
6.     How do we respond to those who rule over us?
Obey and sustain them
7.     Who did Paul ask the people to pray for?

Choice 2. 1 Timothy 1-6 “Be Thou an Example of the Believers”

Review Timothy 2:9-10 and describe in writing what Paul said about dress standards. Women should dress modestly and without costly apparel. They should dress with reverence like godliness.

How does D&C 61:18, 36 help us understand that what Paul taught applies to both men and women? The Lord gives us a commandment that what He says unto one, He says unto us all.

Study Moses 6:9; Mosiah 2:37; and Alma 42:2. Then list three reasons our bodies could be considered sacred. How does understanding that our bodies are sacred help us to know why they should be covered modestly? We are created in the image of God and He created us. When we are immodest, we are rebelling God and listening to Satan. Our bodies are a gift from God and so they are very special. They represent a temple. He gave them to us so we could come to earth and have families. Therefore we should treat them with respect by dressing modestly.

What is mentioned in Alma 1:32 that relates to the other concern Paul mentioned about dress? What can you do to apply these principles in your life? When we dress immodestly, we will also indulge in all other manners of wickedness. When we sin a little, we are more likely to sin even more. I will be able to follow the commandments as I strive to make one good decision after another.

2. List the evidence Paul mentioned in 1 Timothy 4:1-5 that an apostasy would not only come in the future, but that some people were already practicing false doctrines. Paul describes the lasts days as people departing from the faith, listening to the devil, and speaking lies. We already read about these things going on in the scriptures as well as in our day today.

3. How could Paul’s counsel to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12 be used to strengthen a new missionary or a young person called to serve in any responsibility? As we strive to be a good example in every aspect of our life, people will be drawn to us and want to have what we have.

4. Review Timothy 6:7-11 and answer the following questions:
What did Paul teach about the love of money? It is the root of all evil.
In what sense is the love of money the “root of all evil”? We can become addicted to it.

5. What guidelines are given in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 and Jacob 2:18-19 that when followed can help ensure that you do not focus too much on money or material wealth? Instead of being rich in this world, be rich in good works and seek after the kingdom of God. There will be treasures in heaven that await you.

Unit 1 Choice 3. Romans 6. Baptism

Review Romans 6:1-13

What must be done with sin before baptism can occur?
We shall not serve sin.

What events from Christ’s life are symbolized in baptism?
His death, his burial, and His resurrection.

Concerning this symbolism, why shouldn’t someone be baptized by sprinkling?
As we go completely under the water we are symbolizing Christ’s burial. Christ was not partially buried. He was completely buried so that He could rise again and be resurrected. If we want to be like Him, we must do the things He did.

What do these verses teach about how we can maintain the “newness of life?”
Be being baptized, we are participating in one of the saving ordinances. So when we do thing and continue to follow Heavenly Father, we shall also be resurrected and be able to live with him again.

According to Mosiah 3:19, what part of us would ideally die at baptism?
The natural man which is the part of us that wants to sin.

Study Romans 6:14-23. Write a paragraph that describes how we know whose servants we are. Then write a statement identifying the true source of freedom.

When we are baptized we become servants of God though righteousness. Everyday we must decide if we are going to continue to be servants of God or servants of evil. If we follow God we are promised eternal life. Therefore, we are truly free when we obey God.

Choice 1: The Impact of Example

It is required for the servants of the Lord to be faithful. The apostles have been asked to be examples of Christ. As the apostles are good examples, they influence us to do the same. We in turn are then able to better ourselves as well as the ones around us. It is not enough to just know what is right. People are always watching us and when they see us acting unrighteous, we will lead away the hearts of many and they will not believe the word of God. When we are cleansed from our iniquities we can perform many miracles because we live what we know.

Choice 4: Acts 19-20 Proper Authority and Ministering to the People

Study Acts 19: 1-12; 20:7-12; and list five priesthood ordinances Paul Performed.
  • ·      Baptism
  • ·      Gives the gift of the Holy Ghost
  • ·      Performed many special miracles
  • ·      Blessed the bread for the Sacrament
  • ·      Raised Eutychus from the dead

1.     What did Paul do for the Corinthian saints because it hadn’t been done right the first time? He baptized them in the name of Jesus and laid his hands on them and gave them the gift of the Holy Ghost.
2.     How does this help answer the question many nonmembers have about the need of being baptized when they have already been baptized? When we are baptized we need to be baptized with the proper authority and through the name of Jesus Christ.
3.     In what way did Paul bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost? He laid his hands upon them.
4.     On what day of the week did the saints meet to break bread? The first day of the week. What evidence is there in John 20:1, 19 for why the Sabbath day was changed? Both say the first day of the week; the Sabbath.

Acts 2. The Day of Pentecost

Briefly describe the meaning of the day of Pentecost.
For fifty days after the Passover feast, the Jews participate in a celebration known as Pentecost. At the beginning of the harvest, they give thanks to Heavenly Father through a “feast for weeks.” And He will pour out his Spirit upon all flesh.

List two or three of Peter’s teachings on this day.
Peter tells the story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. He also tells them to repent and to be baptized so they can receive the Holy Ghost and be saved.

In what ways did Peter fulfill his role as a special witness of Jesus Christ?
Peter taught the gospel to everyone he was in contact with. I believe that is what a witness of Jesus Christ is.

What gifts of the Spirit were made manifest on the day of Pentecost?
Everyone was filled with the spirit of the Holy Ghost and began to speak in other tongues.

How did the people respond to what occurred on this day?
They that “gladly received his word were baptized. They continued to be steadfastly in the apostles doctrine, and praising God.”
